Update Device SIP Passwords

A strong device or softphone SIP password is highly recommended to secure your VoIP communications. It helps protect against unauthorized access, fraud, and other security threats, contributing to the overall integrity and reliability of your VoIP system. Super Users and Account Administrators can update device SIP passwords in the Admin Portal. If you have any devices or softphones on your account that you are no longer using, we encourage you to remove them from your account, as it is important to keep your device list up to date.


Follow the instructions below based on whether the device/softphone is no longer needed, or if it is still in use:

  1. Sign in to the Admin Portal.
  2. Click Phone System (on left), then click Devices.
  3. To view softphones, be sure the Include Softphones option is checked.
  4. Hover over the target device and click the trash icon.
  5. When prompted, click Yes to confirm you are sure.
Device/Softphone in Use

Update the device SIP password using the steps below based on what the provisioning model is listed as on the Devices page in Admin Portal:

  1. Sign in to the Admin Portal.
  2. Click Phone System (on left), then click Devices.
  3. To view softphones, be sure the Include Softphones option is checked.
  4. Hover over the target device and click the Reset (key) icon.
  5. A Change Password window appears. Click Change to confirm. (Once you click Change, the softphone will not work until you paste the new password into the client settings of that softphone in step 7.)
  6. The confirmation screen displays the SIP ID, Proxy/Registrar, and SIP Password.
  7. Copy the SIP Password and paste into the softphone client settings. (The SIP ID and Proxy/Registrar will not change.)
Other
  1. Sign in to the Admin Portal.
  2. Click Phone System (on left), then click Devices.
  3. To view softphones, be sure the Include Softphones option is checked.
  4. Hover over the target device and click the Edit (pencil) icon.
  5. From the Basic Settings page, click the Change Password button.
  6. Confirm by clicking Change. (Once you click Change, the softphone/device will not work until you paste the new password into the client settings of that softphone/device in step 8.)
  7. The confirmation screen displays the SIP ID, Proxy/Registrar, and SIP Password.
  8. Copy the SIP Password and paste it into the softphone client settings. (The SIP ID and Proxy/Registrar will not change.)

We recommend removing the softphone/device and adding it back so that the new SIP password is displayed on the screen to copy and paste into the softphone/device client settings.

  1. Sign in to the Admin Portal.
  2. Click Phone System (on left), then click Devices.
  3. To view softphones, be sure the Include Softphones option is checked.
  4. Hover over the target device and click the trash icon.
  5. When prompted, click Yes to confirm you are sure.
  6. Click Phone System (on left), then click Extensions.
  7. Hover over the extension to which the device should be assigned, then click the edit (pencil) icon.
  8. Click Devices (on left), then click Add Device (on right).
  9. Fill in the required fields, then click Next (top right).
  10. The confirmation screen displays the SIP ID, Proxy/Registrar, and SIP Password.
  11. Copy each of the above and paste into the softphone/device client settings.
